      MINI COOPER  dream of your dream


      The British Motor Corporation came into existence in 1952 by the merging of two manufacturers, Nuffield Motors and Austin. Nuffield was known for its Morris line of vehicles, while Austin had its 'Seven' model line. The transition for the two manufacturers was difficult and had been forced out of necessity. After World War II, many vehicle manufacturers could not stay in business due to destroyed factories, recovering economies, strained resources, and lack of funds. Combining the two companies was a means to stay in business.
      A fuel shortage was occurring. German engineers quickly adapted and began producing fuel-efficient vehicles. Examples include the Volkswagen Beetle. Leonard Lord, Chairman of BMC and former head of Austin, commissioned Sir Alec Issigonis to design a vehicle to compete with the German-made vehicles.





      Alec Issigonis was a graduate of Battersea Technical College. After graduation he worked as a draftsman for a plethora of engineering projects. Later, he joined Morris Motors where he was tasked with creating and fitting suspensions to the Morris vehicles.

      Issigonis was outfitted with requirements to create a fuel-efficient, affordable, safe vehicle capable of carrying four individuals including luggage. To save on development costs, it was requested that an existing BMC engine be used. What he created was a vehicle that sat atop of 10 inch wheels. By using smaller wheels there was little need for wheel wells.

      The car was expected to carry four individuals; the combined weight of the passengers being greater than the entire vehicle. A suspension was needed that could accept this pay-load. With his prior experience creating and working with suspensions, Issigonis designed a rubber cone suspension.

      A 950 cc, four cylinder, BMC engine was selected. It was mounted in the front and expected to power the front wheels, a system that was revolutionary at the time. Instead of mounting the engine longitudinally, it was place transversely. The transmission was place under the engine due to space constraints.

      When Issigonis presented his designs and recommendations to Lord in 1958, changes were requested. Instead of the 950 cc engine, a 34 horsepower, 848 cc engine would be used, making the vehicle slower but more importantly, more safe. The other request was to make the vehicle two inches wider.

      There were two versions of the car when it was first introduced on August 26, 1959. The only difference between the 1959 Austin and Morris versions was their badges.

      John Cooper had designed vehicles that successfully won the Formula One championships in 1959 and 1960.

      He proposed a marriage between his 1000 cc Formula Junior engine with the Mini. Lord approved the idea and in 1961 the Mini Cooper was born. It was fitted with a 997 cc engine producing 55 horsepower. Later, the Cooper S came into being with the advent of the 970 cc and the 1275 cc engine - the latter capable of 76 horsepower.

      From 1964 through 1967 the little car dominated the Monte Carlo Rally. The car easily achieved these victories using a 91 horsepower engine.

      Minis became more than just a practical car, they became a fashion statement. This, combined with their practicality, fuel efficiency, and success on the race track, created an overwhelming demand for the little car.

      In the 1980's, the Mini was starting to loose momentum. Rover tried to revitalize the Mini brand by creating special editions. In all, there were more than 40 different editions created between 1980 and 2000.

      In 1953, Reliant Engineering Co. brought out their first passenger car–the Regal. Reliant chose this name in recognition of the Coronation of Elizabeth II, also in that year. All models had a very small “bonnet,” intended to allow only a coolant and oil check, while further engine maintenance had to be done by accessing the engine from inside the car. The Regal went through a series of changes, such as wind-down windows and a raised roofline to increase head room for the passengers. The MK III which you see here is a soft-top version made from molded fiberglass mounted on an ash frame. The MKIII was competitive in performance with similarly powered four-wheeled cars yet only required a motorcycle license to drive it.

      Reliant Engineering Ltd. was established in 1935 to make 3-wheeled delivery vans powered by Austin Seven engines. In 1953 they brought out their first passenger car--the Regal. The car was built to comply with the government’s arbitrary 896 pound weight limit, so that the owners could take advantage of road tax and driving license requirements. The Regal series was loved by many people because the unusual combination of qualities results from it's makers aim to produce a normal car on three wheels rather than a miniature vehicle. Reliant was booming in the mid-70s with their 3-wheeled vehicles - producing 350 per week. It has a fiberglass body with two wheels in the rear and one wheel in the front; the car has a peculiar look. Production of the Regal ceased in 1973 with the introduction of the Reliant Robin. Reliant stopped producing cars in 2003.

      The Ant was initially designed for export to Greece and other Mediterranean and middle east countries. Due to its versatility, it also found an English market. The Ant is based on a Regal 3/25 chassis and running gear. It has a load capacity of 896 pounds. The vehicle you see here is a pick-up truck with a one piece fiberglass cab. The TW9 came in a range of bodies - pick-up, road sweeper, van, water tanker, garbage truck, or snowplow.

      Otas offered two FIAT-based sports cars–most were based on a FIAT 500, 850 or 128. While this car was more costly than FIAT’s 850 coupé, it was far more exclusive. One was shown at the 1970 New York International Auto Show. This fiberglass body was designed by Francis Lombardi. Notice it has only one windshield wiper. This exotic Italian car is approximately 11.5 feet long and 3.5 feet tall! Although the Otas may look small from the outside it is quite a roomy car inside.

      The NSU trademark was first used in 1892. Motorcycle production began in 1901, and the first NSU-badged car was introduced at the Berlin Motor Show in 1907. NSU, probably better known as a motorcycle maker than a car maker, ceased motorcycle production in 1963. Car production stopped in the late 1920s while the company prospered with motorcycles. Although the factories were destroyed by repeated air raids in 1944-45, by the mid 1950s, NSU was the world’s largest motorcycle maker. Predicting the end of the motorcycle boom, they turned their attention to cars. In 1955 development began on a small 4-seater car, and in 1959 the first NSU Prinz cars rolled off the line.

      The NSU 1000 represented a major change for NSU. This model has a four-cylinder, overhead cam engine which is air-cooled and located in the rear. You can see that the styling of the Prinz 4 carried over, the 1000 is larger with an 88 inch wheelbase and an overall length of 150 inches. With the quad headlights, the 1000 looks even more like the Corvair. For the U.S. market, the NSU 1000 was altered with the use of quad, round, sealed-beam headlights (the original, oval headlights were still illegal in the USA). Front parking lights and turn signals were round and mounted below the bumper. The wraparound front blinkers were replaced with a metal panel. Later, front seat headrests were installed, as were other safety features, like front seat shoulder belts and 4-way emergency flashers.

      While the NSU Prinz 1, 2, and 3 were inexpensive, economical cars, they were not considered stylish. NSU realized that if they sought to sell small cars in volume numbers they needed a car with a more appealing style. The designers at NSU thought the Chevrolet Corvair was an attractive automobile and decided to style the Prinz 4 after the Corvair. It was a great success and sales skyrocketed.

      Charles Mochet was France’s best known maker of pedal cars as a practical means of transportation for adults. He made pedal and cycle cars until WWII. In 1945 Mochet turned to powered vehicles. He did away with pedals and added a 125cc engine – this became the C.M.-125 which you see here. The simple design follows Mochet’s philosophy, “If it isn’t there, it can’t break.” The car sold well partly because no driver’s license was required, and partly because new post-war French cars from Citroën and Renault had a waiting period of years, compared to Mochet’s six weeks. This example from the first year of production has the nose section flanged and bolted instead of welded. It has a primitive “homemade” steering wheel. The gas tank also serves as an extension of the seatback. At Mochet’s peak in the early 1950s, he was making 40 cars a month.

      The MGB proved even more successful than its predecessor the MGA. In 1965 came a coupé version–the MGB GT, which had an attractive and functional closed version of the standard body. In appearance, the front end was essentially the same, but the windshield was slightly higher to allow for a higher roof line. In the place of the roadsters small trunk lid was a much larger hinged tailgate that provided access to the space inside, making it one of the earliest examples of the hatchback car. Inside, a small rear seat was provided which could be folded flat to provide a platform for luggage, making it a useful two-seat touring car. The MGB GT was not only a good looking car, but it offered saloon car comfort levels with a sports cars performance. As a result, the gt became very popular with those who wanted something more civilized than a roadster.

      In 1936 the MG (which stands for Morris Garage) Car Company began production of the T-series. They introduced the MGTA Midget with just over 3,000 being produced. Then came the MGTB, and only a few were produced before World War II broke out. During World War II production of MG's ceased as the company was put into service for the war effort, making tanks, airplane parts, and other military items. When the war ended, MG was anxious to get back to making sports cars, and the TC was produced from 1945-49. Seeing the U.S. had much more cash available to spend, the company made a drastic change in marketing to focus on North America. A total redesign of the MGTC was necessary which led to the MGTD. From the TD emerged the MGTF–with a restyled body, a more idealized shape, increased power output, and improved comfort and accessibility.

      Servicemen returning from the European Theater after WWII had become infatuated with the sports car. One of the most popular and recognizable was the MG T-series. In 1949, the MG TC gave way to the MG TD; in 1953, the MG TD gave way to the MG TF. The TF was at the time a rather unsuccessful attempt to stall the impatient car enthusiasts who had started to get tired of the long series of the T-type and were crying for something new. Hence, the TF became a short production series before the MGA was released. It was basically a cosmetic modification of the TD but had a more modern look, with a more inclined radiator and built-in head lamps. In hindsight, the TF turned out to be perhaps the most beautiful of all the MG models, and the low production number (a total of 6200 of the 1250cc model and 3400 of the 1500cc model engines being made) now makes it very attractive for collectors. TF was available in these color options: black with red, green, or biscuit upholstery; red with red or biscuit upholstery; green with green or biscuit upholstery, and ivory with red or green upholstery.

      One of the oldest and most famous names in automobile history is Mercedes. The company began building cars in 1901. Daimler-Benz factories suffered greatly during World War II, but their recovery after the war was dramatic. The company focused on building delivery vans, pick-up trucks, and ambulances. The first post-war passenger cars were produced in 1947, and they returned to the luxury market in 1951. The Unimog was developed as a farm tractor and produce-hauler but with military potential in mind. Production began in 1949. The name “Unimog” was taken from the concept of a "universal-motor-gerät”, or a universal motor equipment. The name, like the concept, has retained its validity to this day; however the unique design of the Unimog, with its wide range of operational uses, continues to have much development potential. (Mercedes-Benz still produces a vehicle called the Unimog, but its appearance is far different).

      Ferruccio Lamborghini was a manufacturer of air conditioning and tractors. Legend tells he bought a Ferrari but was not satisfied with it. When his complaints were dismissed, he vowed to make a better car. In 1949 he began producing farm tractors with small diesel engines. The first Lamborghini automobile was shown in 1963. The Urraco p300 you see here was introduced at the November 1974 Turin Auto Show. It was designed by Marcello Gandini and built by Bertone. The floor is incorporated into the all-steel body. The engine is mid-mounted, v-8 90 degrees, light-alloy and aluminum block with gearbox and differential built in the same block and pressed-in liners. This 2 + 2 seater coupe can achieve 0-60 mph in 5.6 seconds. The Urraco was exceptional in terms of aesthetics and performance.

      This tiny microcar, designed and built by airplane pilots Claude Cry and Cale Orcutt, was one of the most successful microcars. The first model was produced in 1947 and resembled a racing car. The example you see here is the more angular third series. It offers a practical 2-seater roadster body made of metal. This vehicle could be purchased fully assembled or as a kit. Doors were optional. This model was very successful and helped total Midget sales climb to over 5,000 cars. By 1967, sales of King Midgets began to decline with the introduction of practical economy cars like the Volkswagen Beetle. After a devastating fire, the company closed it doors in 1969. This very successful microcar was continually manufactured for nearly a quarter of a century. Local car enthusiast Bill Minor built the 2 seater, fiberglass boat and trailer.

      This German company was producing cars as early as the 1920s but they struggled financially through that decade. In 1931, Hanomag had 25% of the small-car market in Germany, trailed by DKW (19%) and BMW (17%). The following year they gambled on concentrating on a single series–the 1.1 Liter (later re-named Garant). The gamble worked, and soon it was necessary to run the plant two-shifts to meet the demand. By 1936, Hanomag would celebrate building 65,000 cars. The Hanomag you see here was introduced in 1939 as a modern, streamlined, economical middle-class family car. It was built for one year and never received a “real” name but was always referred to as the “1.3 Liter.” By 1940 Hanomag turned to war production and began producing 4.2 liter, 6 cylinder Maybach engines for military vehicles. The 1.3 Liter would be Hanomag’s last production car.

      The first appearance of the Irat name was in 1914 but there is no record of car production until 1921. In 1938, a special bodied sports car was built by Georges Irat with a Citroën Traction Avant drive train. It had all-round rubber independent suspension. Approximately 200 were made before World War II interrupted production.

      The first examples of this model, in 1950, had a wooden frame with alloy panels; the next step was an all-steel body. By 1957, the body was fiberglass, giving the Fuldamobil a more handsome appearance. The first of the three-wheel models had a negative guidance roll radius. Recognizing the consequences of this, the problem was corrected. By 1956, a four wheel model was produced, but the three wheel model was more popular in countries where vehicles were taxed by the number of wheels.
